A large proportion of chambers’ work concerns patent disputes, primarily involving infringement or revocation proceedings in the High Court, Intellectual Property Enterprise Court (IPEC) and Appellate Courts. Members of chambers also appear in proceedings before the UK Intellectual Property Office, and represent clients in opposition proceedings before Opposition Divisions and Boards of Appeal in the European Patent Office in Munich. In addition, in recent years members of chambers have appeared in the High Courts of both Dublin and Belfast.

Members of chambers have been involved in patent litigation embracing all major areas of technology including biotechnology, pharmacology, chemistry, electronics, computing, telecommunications and mobile telephony, information technology and mechanical engineering.

In addition, members of chambers have recently dealt extensively with issues relating to Supplemental Protection Certificates.

The leading practitioners’ textbook on patent law, Terrell on the Law of Patents, has been edited by senior members of chambers since its 9th edition in 1951. Terrell is described as “The undisputed authority on the law of patents in the United Kingdom, from application to infringement. First published in 1884 and regularly cited in court, Terrell is an essential reference for anyone seeking practical and clear guidance on patent law, practice, and procedure”. The 19th edition of Terrell, to which twelve members of chambers contributed, was published in May 2020.
